Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT IS YOUR STYLE?
I specialise in documentary style wedding photography but will always capture formal images as requested by clients. I try to blend in with wedding guests and won’t intrude on private moments. I have to do a certain amount of directing, so that photographs give the coverage of your wedding that it deserves, but I don’t take couples away from their event to stage theatrical photos.

HOW LONG DO YOU STAY AT A WEDDING?
Depending on the coverage you require, I will attend your wedding from an hour before and up to the ‘last dance.’ Half-day packages have different timings, but I think my website makes that clear. I’m always happy to negotiate this.

DO YOU TAKE FORMAL AND GROUP PICTURES?
I’m happy to take group and requested photographs, but that’s only part of what I do, so shouldn’t take up too much time.

DO YOU EXPECT TO HAVE A MEAL AT THE WEDDING?
I usually bring my own sandwiches. However, if you want to offer me a meal, I’m happy to accept.

HOW DO WE BOOK YOU?
The first thing to do is to contact me to check if I am available. I tend to get booked up at least 12 months in advance but may still have some dates free. Most couples will book after looking through my website. However, if you wish to have a chat on the phone or view some sample albums, I am happy to meet you at a convenient time. A booking is accepted once you have paid the reservation fee of £100 completed the booking form and signed my terms and conditions.

WHAT HAPPENS IF WE WANT TO CANCEL OUR WEDDING BOOKING?
The client may cancel their wedding booking at any time by giving written noticeto the photographer. However, they will then forfeit any monies paid.AND PLEASE NOTE: cancellation less than 12 weeks before the wedding will result in the payment in full becoming due. All cancellations must be in writing, to Steve Hillman.

DO YOU TAKE BLACK & WHITE PHOTOS?
Any image that I take can be converted to monochrome by using filters during the editing process. If I see an image that lends itself to the technique, I will apply the filter, so you get to see it. If you have a special request for monochromatic filters, we can negotiate this.

WILL YOU TAKE SOME PICTURES OF US BOTH TOGETHER?
I always encourage my wedding couples to take a quiet walk around their venue after the ceremony, and then I’ll be snapping away discretely. Don’t worry- there will be lots of shots of you both together!

WHAT DO WE RECEIVE?
Your high-resolution print-ready files will be supplied via a USB stick.

WHAT ABOUT ALBUMS?
You can order an album after your wedding if you wish, and some of my pricing packages are inclusive of an album.

WHAT ARE YOUR RULES ON COPYRIGHT?
Under UK law, copyright automatically belongs the creator of the work, in this case the photographer. The same as it does with music or paintings. You have personal printing rights, and you can share on social media. You can’t use them for commercially, and they must not be altered or modified in any way.

DO YOU INSTRUCT ON HOW TO POSE FOR SHOTS?
I wouldn’t dream of instructing for posing! What I do find is that most couples go through phases during the day: high nerves, tension about how they look, relief, happiness and finally back to themselves again. I capture it all and capture it well. And most clients say I’m good at putting people at their ease, so don’t worry about this aspect.

HOW LONG WILL I HAVE TO WAIT FOR MY PHOTOS?
At my current level of operation, I get photographs to clients within four weeks. Most times it’s quicker than this, at peak times, it might be slightly longer.

AM I ALLOWED TO PRINT MY PHOTOS?
Yes. You get full-resolution photographs, good enough for a 3 ft by 2 ft print. If you want canvases or larger prints, I can have a look at my originals and advise. Where you get them printed, and how, is your responsibility.

WHAT RETOUCHING AND EDITING DO YOU DO?
I do detailed edits of colour, light, structure, etc, and will take out anything that obstructs a good photo, like a stray wheely-bin or car. I don’t apply filters or change colour saturations. The photos you receive will be a true representation of the colours on the day of your wedding.

DO YOU WORK WITH A SECOND SHOOTER?
No.

CAN YOU SHOOT AT NIGHT OR IN POOR LIGHT?
I am the technical expert, don’t forget. I understand how to do these things and I have the right equipment for the job. I can shoot in high sunshine, rain, thunder, twilight, evening and night-time. Let me worry about that.

DO I OWN THE COPYRIGHT OF MY PHOTOS?
As the content creator, under UK copyright law I am the copyright owner of the images. However, you have the freedom to share, print, scrapbook, and use your images for personal use however you see fit. I do not watermark my images and you’re free to print them at your lab of choice if you decide not to use the professional print lab included with your online galleries.

WILL MY PHOTOS BE ON YOUR WEBSITE AND SOCIAL MEDIA?
I update my website regularly and post blogs or use up-to-date shots for different website tabs. It’s the same for my Social Media accounts. I will NEVER post shots of your wedding that you haven’t seen first. I will release no more than four photos to you straight after the wedding, that you can use of I can, then no more until you have them all.

ARE YOU INSURED?
Yes. I am fully insured with both equipment insurance and liability insurance. If your venue needs to see my certificates, just let me know and I’ll email them over.

DO YOU HAVE EXTRA EQUIPMENT?
Yes, I always carry extra kit with me. And always two cameras.

HOW DO YOU BACK UP AND STORE OUR PHOTOS?
Your photographs are downloaded straight to my server and hard-drives.

IF THE WEDDING RUNS LATE, WILL YOU STAY?
I will stay late to match your needs, but this rarely happens.

HOW FAR IN ADVANCE SHOULD I BOOK?
I have some clients who book 2 years in advance, some 6 weeks. I always say to book as soon as you can if you want to work with me. The further in advance you book the more likely I will be available on your chosen date.

CAN YOU SHOOT IN BAD WEATHER?
Rain or bad weather might change the spread of the photos, but it is always possible to create a broad and stunning set, whatever the weather.

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU ARE ILL OR INJURED BEFORE OUR WEDDING?
I have network of wedding photographers I can call upon should I need to. My daughter, another wedding photographer, is also on hand if things get tricky.

HOW MANY IMAGES ARE INCLUDED WITH YOUR COVERAGE?
I don’t put a number on how many images you will receive, but I can assure you it is plenty!

HAVE YOU WORKED WITH VIDEOGRAPHERS?
I have worked alongside videographers for many years and have good connections with them I can also recommend a few if you are looking for one.

DO YOU TAKE ANY BREAKS DURING THE WEDDING DAY?
I will take a break while you are having your meal.

CAN WE GO TO MULTIPLE LOCATIONS DURING THE WEDDING SHOOT?
If you have a particular set of locations on mind, we can negotiate this, and I have some ideas of my own to supplement your thinking. I won’t take you away from your guests for long though, as I don’t feel this works well.

DO YOU SHOOT ONLY FULL WEDDINGS OR ELOPEMENTS?
I shoot both and enjoy both. I have also shot other kinds of weddings- perhaps when the couple are already married or are having two ceremonies. I’m happy to take on the challenge of any kind of wedding.

WHAT FORMS OF PAYMENT DO YOU ACCEPT?
I accept bank transfer or cash. You pay a booking fee straight away, and the remainder of monies due 14 days before your wedding day.

WHAT DO YOU WEAR TO A WEDDING?
I dress up for weddings, as you would expect, but always have suitable footwear for roaming around venues.

DO YOU WORK OFF SHOT LIST?
If you want to give me a shot-list, I will use it, but I have my own creative ideas too.

CAN I PUT MY PHOTOS ONLINE?
You can use your images anywhere, digitally, or otherwise. I ask that you credit me if you show a photo I’ve taken. Please don’t apply filters to my images when you show them off or use them commercially in any way.
